Solar Acronyms

The name for solar spacecraft, instruments, and observatories is often carefully chosen to give a humorous, evocative, or inspiring acronym. Sometimes, things turn out a little differently.

LASCO

LASCO is the Large Solar Coronal Observatory on the SOHO spacecraft. LASCO is operated by NRL in Maryland.

SOLAR-A was the designation given in the 1980's by the Japanese Space Agency to its spacecraft that was renamed Yohkoh (sunbeam) after its 1991 launch.
